Having moved to Plymouth in the early seventies as a student I joined the Veterinary Hospital in May 1983 as a book keeper/administrator. Having worked in the accountancy profession for the previous five years the move to the veterinary profession was seen as a temporary step!
My appointment was part of the policy of steady growth for the Practice. A major part of that growth was the brand new Veterinary Hospital building at our current Estover site and all our permanent resources, including the administration, have been based there since I joined the Practice. The fourteen people working at the Practice then have now become fifty including the three directors. As the Practice grew the administration improved and computerisation was embraced to ease the administration workload and enhance and rationalise the already voluminous record keeping. Two further office people were employed as well as a full time maintenance person to look after the five sites and our vehicles.
Veterinary practice management became an increasingly important part of the veterinary profession and having been at the forefront of this area of veterinary practice, I, and our then senior partner, John Bower, were founder members of the Veterinary Practice Management Association (VPMA) which was formed in September 1993. I also helped set up the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management and this accreditation is now seen as the gold standard for veterinary practice managers. I was President of the VPMA in 2000/01. I have been on the committee of the local branch of the RSPCA both as Treasurer and more recently as Chairman. I am also a governor at a local Secondary School and was a governor at my children's Infant School.
